Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur Donates RM60,000 For Breast Cancer

Breast Prostheses And Mastectomy Brassiere For The Underprivileged....

Pantai Hospital Kuala Lumpur (PHKL) through its signature annual breast cancer initiative, the Wear It Pink Campaign donated RM60,000 to the National Cancer Society of Malaysia (NCSM) and the Breast Cancer Welfare Association of Malaysia (BCWA). Since its inauguration in 2006, Wear It Pink has been actively involved in various activities including the Pink October Walk, Health Summits, Charity Hi-Tea to Outreach Programmes which are aimed to raise awareness and funds on breast cancer causes.

“Now more than ever, we need to pay extra attention to our cancer fighters due to the global outbreak of COVID19. Cancer patients have a low immunity system due to the treatment they have to undergo to control the cancer. We need to ensure that our cancer patients can still come to our Breast Care Centre for treatment and support,” said Erica Lam, Chief Executive Officer, PHKL. “This amount of donation can make a positive impact in the lives of our cancer patients and PHKL pledges to continue playing an active role to help them in any way we can”. 

For the 2020 Edition of the Wear It Pink Campaign, PHKL sold more than 1,500 boxes of the special edition pink masks to raise the fund. “We want the patient to feel as natural as possible with their new body image, after breast cancer surgery, just like how they were before having breast cancer. We hope this post mastectomy brassiere n prosthesis will further enhance their journey to recovery. So we are very thankful to PHKL and the public who contributed to this cause,” said Dr. Saladina Jaszle Jasmin, Consultant Breast and Endocrine Surgeon, PHKL who also chairs the breast cancer campaign for the hospital this year. 

Speaking further on breast cancer, Lam congratulated PHKL’s clinical research team led by Dr. Mastura Md. Yusof for their success in conducting a trial with immunotherapy for Triple Negative Breast Cancer (TNBC). The metastatic TNBC is the most aggressive type of breast cancer that results in high mortality especially among younger patients. Dr. Mastura’s team, along with other research teams from 29 countries were evaluating the efficacy and safety of pembrolizumab, an immunotherapy drug. The drug was combined with one of the three different standard chemotherapy options to treat locally recurrent, inoperable or metastatic TNBC that was previously not treated with chemotherapy in the metastatic setting. 

The full primary manuscript detailing the positive results from the KEYNOTE-355 study will be published in The Lancet, one of the oldest and best-known peer-reviewed medical journals in the coming weeks. 

Throughout the Pink October period, PHKL will be illuminated in pink lights which can be seen on the exterior of the premises to encourage more Malaysians to get breast health screening for early detection. Special ultrasound and mammogram packages are also available until December 2020.
